Quango Merry-go-Round

by Kellsy @ 2008-05-28 - 08:34:05

How many times can a quango re-structure? No, its not one of those jokes... how many X type of people does it take to screw in a light bulb... For three years we've restructured and restructured. The irony is that now... 3 years later... many of the staff are back where they were originally. And I'm only talking from when I joined the organisation; before that they were 'restructuring'. Years of restructuring, moving people from department to department, different jobs, much the same job, different unit, new unit, etc etc. I am a firm believer that if at first you don't get something right, keep trying different means to achieve the goal. But, come on, at some stage don't people just view the whole thing as a farce... I know I do.

Should we expect our leaders and people getting paid top salaries to know what their doing? Should we pay our leaders to experiment until they manage to get something right? Do our top people get to where they are by 'talking the talk' and then they can't actually implement anything that works, or bring about change in a logical way and in a reasonable timescale?

So... my re-structuring meeting. Called by the department head as an 'update' meeting. Instantly I new something was up when I see this type of meeting scheduled in my diary. The three of us sit there - me and my new boss 'nodding dog style' as the department head explains how the change will affect us. I'm thinking.... hmmm... the reality is that my new boss has kindly declined the new job that the organisation 'put him in' as it has nothing to do with the job he applied for. Sounds really familiar as I applied for a job 3 years ago that has nothing to do with the job they put me in at the time or the job I have now. In the retail sector, isn't this called "bait and switch"... in other work environments... maybe its just called "bad business sense"?

So as a result of the meeting, the current team I work in will disband and I will move within the organisation yet again, to a new line manager yet again. Funny enough, I'm kinda where I started 3 years ago... yet again.

Talk about frustration. This has got to be the most ridiculous place I've ever worked! Too bad I really, really want to feel like the work I do makes a real difference. If only I didn't care so much about my career and my job. Otherwise, I could just ride the merry-go-round and not worry that the organisation is a total whimsical experience where we get paid to turn up to the carnival grounds!
